Level 8 - Getting Over It

Weekly Report 8 10/8/18 - 10/14/18

The general humor of the week was one of attempting to give more cold calls but seeing poor results. Even though there is nothing unexpected about this outcome, it still comes with a lingering tinge of distastefulness, especially in light of the happenings of the week prior.

It reminds me of the quote “There’s no feeling more intense than starting over...Starting over is harder than starting up.” This was stated by Bennett Foddy in Getting Over It, a game about scaling a brutal mountain with wonky controls (and inevitably falling down over and over). It is somewhat accurate to imagine myself as the protagonist of that game, who scaled to a brand new height on the mountain, but then missed one too many footholds and fell all the way back to the bottom. Now, he is simply trying to return to where he was, but it is not much easier.

The fortunate thing about this imagery is that it projects into the future: the man will eventually return to his previous height, and although there will be more falls in the future, the climb will become easier and easier as the man refines his skills as a climber. This is what most players experience when they play Getting Over It. So although there is a bit of discouragement floating through the air right now, time and persistence should cure those minor anxieties.

At this point, one of the assessments was meant to be over an interview, but that will need to wait, since the focus for the next week will still need to be on building courage in professional conversation. For now, research will have to do, and thankfully I have a decent backlog of resources to write about for the next couple of weeks. The goal of finalizing an interview remains, and although it is hard to gauge the exact timeliness of the task, there is no doubt that I will get over it in the coming days.
