Level 5 - Shake 10 Hands (30%)

Updated: Dec 7, 2018

Weekly Report 5 9/17/18 - 9/23/18

Three strangers received an out-of-the-blue handshake today. It feels strange, personally, because if it were me, it would seem abnormal and awkward for someone to approach with that particular gesture without any anticipation, but it is clearly incorrect to push that perception onto other people - they seem to take it as completely natural. In any case, the teachers are next.

This week was one less about learning the particulars of game development and more of learning the particulars of a professional approach - cleaning the résumé from last week, learning to shake hands and combat awkwardness head-on, starting a real digital portfolio, etc. It would not be accurate to say, however, that the assessment was simply forgotten, delegated for future me in a regrettable act of procrastination. An article was selected, and it currently sits partially annotated. But the focus was on the other details, specifically the handshake. It is difficult to build up the short-term confidence necessary to initiate one, but do-able nonetheless.

It is easy to think of it as a sort of sidequest, like what was discussed in last week’s report. I can visualize it on the screen already: A half-transparent, dark blue GUI bubble with the title “Shake 10 Hands” and the green completion bar sitting at 30%. It pulses when the mouse hovers over it, and on a click it expands accordion-style to display more information: “As practice, introduce yourself to seven teachers and three strangers. Get their names.” There is even a mini-checklist there, with the “3 Strangers” subgoal already ticked off and grayed out.

But that quest still has 70% left. And that 70% will be completed within a week, whether I can visualize that or not.

In any case, what else lies on the list for this week includes the conclusion of the next assessment, further production of the digital portfolio, and possibly further preparation of the psyche for the start of cold calling. There are sidequests to be done, but one of them is quickly reaching its conclusion.
