Level 4 - Choosing Sidequests

Updated: Dec 6, 2018

Weekly Report 4 9/10/18 - 9/16/18

The outlook of the week is much more difficult to summarize this time. That is not to say it was a bad week, just that the tasks were more specific in diverging ways.

Developing a modern résumé required a re-assessment of my skills and experience. There were more targeted details to include on the new résumé than I had available to me in the summer, in which a more simple résumé sufficed for finding and securing a low-pay part-time job. Details about Codecember and Games Factory Jam 5 made it onto the draft, among other items that were not on the old résumé, and that made for a more focused, coherent product that is more applicable to the field in pursuit, although the design and the lack of math-related content still bothers me some - things to ponder over before the final.

On a separate note, research is going well. For this week’s assessment, there was a source from a database that was surprisingly insightful once I looked into it. Attempts to find sources in databases will continue, even if nothing comes up multiple times in a row. For now, though, there is an ample backlog of sources to consider for future assessments (especially ones that cover a very specific inquiry with a lot of depth), so that I might not approach a research assessment deadline without a plan, which means there is more time to consider cold calling.

I do not know if I am ready to conduct cold calling. But it can be reasonably argued that that will not be known until it happens. Given that my knowledge of cold calling is very limited, and given that cold calling will help foster skills in professionalism and communication that, according to initial research, developers must master, perhaps the experience could be considered a type of research. It might not be research worth assessing in a full report, but that does not mitigate its value.

Overall, the week was one of opening sidequests. Lanes of research are being found and taken. Résumés and portfolios are entering the list. The search for supplies has begun. Cold calling training has begun. Hopefully, valuable experience will be gained in all of them.
